Heart of the Ocean
by Heather B. Moore
A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a
handsome stranger . . .
What more could Eliza Robinson want?
Except for maybe her life.
In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance,
Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr.
Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father,
Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson
name.
While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New
York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her
Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving
gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a
ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman
who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.
After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put
in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She
encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems
suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that
Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her
and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should
never trust.

My Review
Heart of the Ocean was a magical book that enthralled me from the very first page. I loved everything about this book. It was full of romance, mystery, suspense, tragedy. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I also loved the fact that this book was historical fiction. That made it even better. The world-building in this story was well crafted and and well written. I was able to picture everything in my mind which made it more life like. The plot was well thought out. Every time I thought I had the murder mystery figured out, something would happen, and then I would change my mind. I couldn't figure it out. It made the story even more enjoyable, because it wasn't predictable. I read Heart of the Ocean in one sitting, because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I HAD to know. I also enjoyed reading the story through both Eliza'a and Jon's perspective. It is nice to get that little extra inside scoop to see what they are both thinking and feeling. Heather did a wonderful job on crafting a story that will draw a reader's attention to it immediately.
Eliza was sent to live with her aunt in a Puritan town, because she refused to marry Mr. Beesley. She starts hearing a voice and it really scares after. After she wakes up to glass shattering, she finds her aunt dead. Jon is there to the rescue. Things are not what they seem though. Jon has secrets and these secrets may be connected to the death of Eliza;a aunt and to Helena. When she finally realizes who he is, shock courses through her. Eliza is drawn to Jon, but he is a man she may never have. Jon can't quit thinking or dreaming about Eliza. He doesn't want to be like his father so he keeps his engagement to Apryl even though his heart is telling him something different. With dreams of Helena's death, and the voice she hears, will Eliza be able to solve the death of Helena and figure out what Helena wants? Will Jon final;y learn the truth with happened to his mother and find the love he deserves?
I really loved the characters in this story. They really grew on me. I got to the point to where I was really rooting them on. I loved how Eliza was very stubborn, and didn't care what the high society people thought. If she didn't want to marry, she wasn't going to. She was very honest and caring to people. Jon was just gorgeous!!! He seemed to always be there to protect Eliza. He was always saving her. I loved how the relationship started off with the two but slowly grew into something more. It was nice to see Jon's softer side. I adored their relationship. Nathaniel was a great guy as well. I just didn't think he fit with Eliza. He also couldn't seem to take no for an answer. Gina and Eliza became fast friends. It was nice to see Eliza actually have a friend to hang out with. Now on to the character I didn't like. I couldn't stand Mr. Beesley at all. He was a horrible person and got on my nerves. He only ever thinks of himself. I was hoping he would get what he deserved which in a way he did.
Well, I was completely shocked with the ending. Didn't see that one coming. I was happy with what happened with Jon and Eliza, but the whole murder mystery shocked me. Wow. This is the first book I have read of Heather's. I will definitely be reading her other books now. Heart of the Ocean was beautiful written. I loved the whole ghost aspect of the story. I really wanted Helena's spirit to be at peace too. This is a book I will definitely reread. I recommend them this story to everyone who love a historical fiction novel full of romance and mystery. I also have to mention that the cover is absolutely STUNNING!!!! It is one of my favorite covers. It is beautiful!!!
