Wow! This book was not what I was expecting at all!! Curveball is the first book that I have read by Mariah Dietz, and it won't be the last! This story took me on an emotional journey through several twists and turns that left me completely shell-shocked! This story was very unique to me. I haven't read anything like it.
Ella is a single mother who loves her son, Hayden, something fierce. Being a single mother, Ella faces constant fears. She hardly ever sleeps for fear of someone breaking in or sneaking in her son's window. Hayden suffers from a severe peanut allergy and has had several bad allergic reactions. I don't know how Ella got through that the way she did. She was strong for her son. Ella has a job that she loves and is great at. She works all the time though, because she has to be the best at it. Ella is a perfectionist and her son takes after her in that. I love her relationship with her son. She always puts her son first and I love her because of that.
Coen is an awesome firefighter with medic training. He has one rule and that is not to date his neighbors. He has had some bad experiences with that. Meeting Ella, there was a huge connection right off the bat. But they both pretty much ignored it. Coen adored Hayden so much. I loved how he became a father figure in Hayden's life, teaching him baseball and just being there for him. I adored this man so much. He literally made me swoon. He is the absolute perfect boyfriend.
I loved seeing Coen and Ella slowly become friends. The chemistry built the more they hung out together. They got to be themselves with each other and that made their relationship so comfortable.
I loved how everything turned out, but I was kinda disappointed with how the story ended. The story ended abruptly for me. Seemed a little rushed at the end. I wanted more time of those two together. I was a little confused with the epilogue as well. I had to read it twice and I am still guessing on where they ended up. Wanted more information on Rachel as well.
Curveball was an amazing read that instantly pulled me in!!! I could not put this book down once I started it. The character development was spot on. Each character grew in some way by the end of the book. I loved that the characters felt so real and raw. What they faced every day, is something that we all face everyday. There were some twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. Then bang there was a huge twist that I didn't see coming at all!! That left me completely speechless!! I was in awe for a moment. This book is a MUST read everyone!!!

“I don’t watch TV at
night…” Her voice drifts off, and I know it’s because she realizes I’m going to
ask why.
And I do.
“You're going to laugh.”
“Probably.”
“It's because I can't hear things.”
“What kinds of things are you trying to hear?”
“I don't know. Strange noises and things…”
“Strange noises?”
“Do I need to spell it out for you?” She’s trying to sound annoyed, but I can hear the smile in her voice.
“Apparently, because I have no idea what you're talking about. What kinds of strange noises are you going to hear? I usually turn my TV up to block out all the strange sounds like the neighbor’s kids and the lady behind me that sounds like Fran fucking Drescher.”
“You know who Fran Drescher is?”
“My mother was a big fan of that stupid show she was in. Stop changing the subject. What are you listening for? Hayden won’t sneak out.”
“What if someone breaks in?”
“You're not serious.”
“Of course I'm serious!”
“What do you do all night?” I ask.
“Work,” she admits. “Well, usually I clean, and then I work.”
“I’m coming over.”
“You can’t.”
The panic in her voice doesn’t make her sound upset about the idea, but afraid.
Is it because she likes me?
“Why not?” I ask.
“It’s like nine o'clock.”
“Are you about to turn orange and sprout a stem?”
“That and I'm not wearing a bra, if you must know.”
“So put it back on.”
“You don't understand. That's like saying put your jeans back on.”
“I am in jeans,” I lie just to get a reaction out of her.
“What is wrong with you?” she cries.
“What's wrong with jeans?”
“They're stiff and uncomfortable. Wearing jeans all day is basically equivalent to walking on sandpaper. But at least you guys have pockets that will actually hold something larger than a thimble and don’t ride up your ass.”
And I do.
