Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

                                      ~~~Review~~~
Don't Speak has become one of my top favorite books!!!  When I found out that Katy Regnery was writing this book, and it was inspired by The Little Mermaid, my world completely stopped!!  The Little Mermaid is my all time favorite favorite tale/Disney movie so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one.  I had to have this book!!  Katy did a wonderful job pulling elements out of that classic fairy tale and bringing them into this wonderfully, written masterpiece!!
Laire lives on Corey Island and is the daughter of a local fisherman.  She has lived a very sheltered life.  Living on Corey Island, she is expected to live as simply as possible.  Meaning, settling down at a young age, marry an islander and have babies.  Laire was so unlike her father and two sisters.  She was more like her mother.  She had dreams, ambitions.  Laire didn't want to stay on Corey Island and settle down.  She wanted to be a fashion designer in New York.  She wanted to eventually find love.  And she found an all encompassing love that that shook her very being, and yet, it also broke her heart.  Erik was everything to her.  Then something beautiful yet scary happens to her and her family completely disowns her.  I was completely shocked over that.   What kind of family would do that.  I loved Laire and was able to connect with easily.  She was so sweet and innocent.  Everything was a new learning experience for her.  I loved reading from her POV and seeing everything in a whole new light.
Erik is the Governor's son, and his family's social status is everything to them. He is groomed and trained to follow in the footsteps of his father, but he has no interest in being the type of lawyer that is father wants him to be.  Erik doesn't do anything to change it though.  He lives the life that was chosen for him.  When he meets Laire everything changes with him.  He has this connection to her that he has never felt with anyone before.  But his family lives in a whole other world than what Laire did.  His family would not approve of her, especially is mother.  And boy oh boy, I did not like his mother at all.  She was such an awful person.  No wonder she got the name Ursula. Erk was a sweetheart.  I couldn't help but fall in love with him.  He was a person who lived in the moment and wanted to see where those moments would take him.
This story was broken up into two parts.  The first part of the story focuses on when Erik and Laire meet at such a young age.  Their whirlwind romance that changes their lives in so many ways.  The sneaking around and the secrets that had to be kept.  It was sweet and cute.  I could tell how young these two were.  The insecurities they had. How clueless they were sometimes.  I was reminded what it felt like to be at the age.  The second part focuses on Erik and Laire meeting again after a very long time.  Hurt and pain rises.  Forgiveness is given.  Revelations and secrets come to light.  Erik and Laire have changed so much in the second part of this book.  They both have grown up. They both come to an understanding as to what happened to them.  This part of the story was so beautiful, especially when Erik got the shock of his life.  Had so many teary eyed moments with this part.
I loved the relationship that Erik and Laire had.  Meeting each other changed everything for them.  They are from two different worlds.  Laire from the sea and Erik from land.  But, they agreed that they would make it work no matter what.  That they would make their own rules, and I loved that.  Now I am not a fan of insta-love.  It has to be well written for me to enjoy it, and Katy did a fantastic job with this. I almost had a panic attack when everything was a little rushed for them.  But, then I realized this is a modern day retelling of a fairy tale, and those fairy tales all have fast growing relationships!
I loved that my daughter's name was in this book!!!  Loved it so much more because of that as well.  I was very thankful and had so many teary eyed moments reading her name in this book. It is my favorite fairy tale after all!! I did feel at times though in the second part that her name was used way too much though.
Don't Speak was everything it could be and more!!  I was not disappointed with this story at all!!  It had everything in it! Love, pain, heartbreak, secrets and so much more. Words can't describe how much I loved this book!!  Katy did a wonderful job with this modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid!  It is a definite MUST read!!!  I absolutely loved it!!!
